I need quite a few and don’t want to buy plastic containers.

Go down to your local grocery store or a store like big lots and ask them to take some cardboard boxes off their hands. I do this for ebaying and shipping and they welcome me and give me as much as I want for free.
Butchers used to get chickens in heavy waxed cardboard boxes which cleaned up quite nicely.
Many fastener suppliers discard empty wooden/cardboard barrels that once held bolts, nuts, etc.
Electric, plumbing, HVAC, instrumentation suppliers still receive items in ‘disposable’, reusable wooden/industrial strength cardboard shipping containers
